teacher

This website is not about me. The important part is the yoga information, not my 'credentials' or personal practice and abilities - hence the absence of photos depicting me in yoga postures. However, I do understand that those who are considering coming to the classes will need information about the person holding the classes, so I put together this material below. For reference you are welcome to contact my dear teacher James Critchlow (contact details on his website at www.yogabirmingham.co.uk).

To be honest, I don't like to call myself a teacher - it would imply me being an authority of some sort, on a pedestal. I see my role as a doorman, inviting people to come in, take a look, see what they find, how they can grow. We learn together - doorman and visitors. I believe that with yoga, like with many other important aspects of our lives involving the internal world, we have to be our own teacher. I can point out the doors for you, open them, guide you within, but you have to do the walking, you have to do the work... The classes are all about you, not me.

I was born and brought up in Hungary, also lived studied and worked in Poland, Austria and Australia, settled in the UK in 1987. I first started to practise yoga regularly in 1984, in Australia. The style was Hatha Yoga, as taught by B.K.S. Iyengar (Iyengar Yoga) and Swami Vishnudevananda (Sivananda Yoga). The study and practice of yoga continued on and off throughout the years. Exploration of the more dynamic styles began in 1998, learning the Ashtanga style started in 1999 under the guidance of James Critchlow in Birmingham. James also taught me to teach, and encouraged me to set up my own classes. James's love of yoga, his commitment and dedication, and his person-to-person teaching style continue to be an inspiration.

Over the years I have undergone a lot of intensive training, to further my own practice, and to improve my ability to teach. I completed a teacher-training course with David Swenson, one of the most prominent Ashtanga teachers worldwide. I have also benefited from teaching by John Scott, the top UK teacher, and attended many workshops with other people of high reputation. In 2002 I travelled to India, to research and practise Ashtanga Yoga. During my stay in Mysore I practised under the direct guidance of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the guru of Ashtanga Yoga. I have been teaching yoga for over seven years.
